Unit 1 - Pre Production Financing a game (james)

Unit 1 -  Pre Production Financing a game

Hardware Costs
- computer costs - In order to run the programs needed for game design, you need a really good pc that is capable of running the programs needed. On a quick look i found that most of the pcs that were able to run the software were around 700-1000 pounds/dollars, which is going to be quite a bit of money in startup costs if you were to design a game.
- Dev kits - With Xbox ones you have a free dev kit, however to purchase an xbox one it is roughly £400 which is also a large sum of money required.
- Peripherals - this includes keyboards mice and screens, however you do not need to have expensive peripherals in order to use the software.
- Software - Unity and Game maker are free, however some of the software does cost at prices of £30+
- Publishing - Steam Green-light -  is a way for game makers to publish their games for the mass audiences to sell without having to pay a startup or running fee. You can also pay money to advertise your own game, this costing money.
- Advertisement - Advertisement for indie games can be costly, however some games such as minecraft has been self sufficient and used word of mouth in order to advertise their game. No commercial advertising up until 2013 was used.
- Crowd funding is when game creators either gain donations for early access, or ask for a kickstarter campaign where people read up on the idea of the game, and fund the creation of it. This can lead to a much cheaper route of payment for a game and may result in some copies of the game becoming free to top donaters
